Ivan Lendl: Alfons Mucha

What do the tennisman Ivan Lendl, aka Ivan the Terrible, or the Terminator, and Alfons Mucha, world famous artist of the Art Nouveau movement have in common? Looks like one was very fond of the other. I’ll let you guess which one :). As promised yesterday, follow me and get your dose of culture…

Quel est le point commun entre le tennisman Ivan Lendl, dit Ivan le Terrible, ou le Terminator, et Alfons Mucha, artiste Art Nouveau à la renommée mondiale? On dirait que l’un était un grand fan de l’autre. Je vous laisse deviner qui :). Comme promis hier, suivez-moi pour une piqûre de culture…

I’ve shown you the outside of the Obecní dům (Municipal House) before. But I actually never set foot inside. I know it’s an emblematic Art Nouveau building, an artifact of the Czech Nationalism, but I don’t know much more. And while driving to and from Prague, I saw billboards advertising an exhibition about Alfons Mucha, in the Obecní dům. So last Wednesday, I was in Prague for the morning and had some free time. Perfect opportunity. So here I was, 10 minutes before the opening, in front of the Obecní dům, a waiting head in the middle of plenty of other waiting heads…

Je vous ai déjà montré l’extérieur de l’Obecní dům (Maison municipale). Mais je n’ai jamais mis les pieds dedans. Je sais que c’est un bâtiment emblématique de l’Art Nouveau, un artéfact du Nationalisme Tchèque, mais je n’en sais pas trop plus. Et sur la route de Prague, j’ai vu des pubs pour une exposition sur Alfons Mucha, à l’Obecní dům. Donc mercredi dernier, j’étais à Prague pour la matinée et j’avais un peu de temps. L’occase parfait. Donc me voilà, 10 minutes avant l’ouverture, devant l’Obecní dům, une tête qui attend au milieu de plein d’autres têtes qui attendent…

At 10AM sharp, the ticket office opened. After some 15 minutes, maybe, I cleared all the line and got my little ticket. My little golden ticket.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time for a lengthy visit, and only got the ticket to the temporary exhibition.

Malheureusement, je n’avais pas le temps pour une longue visite, et n’ai pris que le billet pour l’exposition temporaire.

And that’s where it hit me. In the face. This little sign, right there.

Et c’est là que je me suis pris une grosse claque. Din face. Ce petit panneau, là, là.

And so it begins… No bags, no umbrellas, no junk food, but most importantly, no pictures allowed (1/8s, ƒ/5, ISO 800, 41 mm)

I didn’t have any luggage with me. Nor did I carry an umbrella. And at 10AM, I wasn’t gonna waltz in with a burger and pop. But no pictures? Really? Whyyyyyyyy?

J’avais pas de valise. Ni de parapluie. Et à 10h du mat, je vais pas non plus me poser là avec un burger et un coca. Mais pas de photo? Vraiment? Pourquoiiiiiiii?

So there you go. The only things from Mucha that I can show you are from the “POD” sales point (Poster On Demand. You choose your poster, they print it for you, in the format you want. Pretty neat :) ).

For those who don’t know, Alfons Mucha is one of the most famous Czech artists. He became famous in Paris at the end of the 19th century for his posters and designs, starting with the posters he made for the Sarah Bernhardt theatre. From there, his art became pretty much ubiquitous, commissioned for food product, magazines, posters and paintings, calendars… I tried to ask the curators if I could just take one small pic of both rooms, just an overview, no flash, to give you an idea, not taking any work of art in particular. But I got a big fat no on this one. And somehow, I didn’t feel like risking it. So what does that have to do with Ivan Lendl? Well, apparently, in 1982 he met Jiří Mucha, Alfons’ son, and discovered Mucha’s work from here, liked it so much that he set out to collect everything Mucha ever made. A few years later, his collection was complete, and he can now boast to have the most complete collection of prints and works of Alfons Mucha known to the public (who knows if any other rich madman already did that before but kept it all to themself?). At the end of the first room, a few quotes from Lendl are displayed on the wall:

Pour les ceusses qui ne le savent pas, Alfons Mucha est un des artistes tchèques les plus célèbres. Il s’est rendu célèbre à Paris à la fin du 19è siècle pour ses affiches et dessins, à commencer par les affiches qu’il a faites pour la troupe Sarah Bernhardt. De là, son art se retrouve partout, commandé pour des marques de nourriture, magazines, affiches et toiles, calendriers… J’ai essayé de demander aux conservateurs si je pouvais prendre une toute petite photo des deux salles, juste pour voir, pas de flash, pour vous donner une idée, sans prendre une œuvre en particulier. Je me suis mangé un gros Non. Et quelque part, j’avais pas trop envie de tenter ma chance. Le rapport avec Ivan Lendl, donc? Ben apparemment, en 1982 il a rencontré Jiří Mucha, le fils d’Alfons, et de là a découvert les œuvres de Mucha, a tellement aimé qu’il a décidé de faire la collection de tout ce que Mucha a fait. Quelques années plus tard, sa collec était finie, et il peut maintenant se targuer d’avoir la collection d’impressions et d’œuvres d’Alfons Mucha la plus complète du monde connu du plublic (qui sait si un riche maniaque n’a pas déjà fait ça avant, mais en se gardant bien de l’étaler sur la place publique?). À la fin de la première salle, quelques citations de Lendl sur le mur:

The first original painting by Alfons Mucha I acquired for the collection was a picture of portraits of prominent Czechs, Smetana and Dvořák for example. When I told Jiří Mucha about it he recalled how he had to sit for his dad and pose as Dvořák or Smetana! – Ivan Lendl

In that same room at the end, an interview of Lendl (in Czech, of course) was playing in a loop. And in between two massive bodyguards, the Davis cup.

Dans cette salle tout au fond, une interview de Lendl (en tchèque, bien sûr) tournait en boucle. Et entre deux gardes du corps imposants, la coupe Davis.

Yes. I could take a picture. I actually did ask before. And it turns out it’s the only thing you could take a picture of, out of the whole exhibition. So I did. See the little plaques all around?

Oui. J’ai pu prendre une photo. J’ai demandé, en fait. Et il semble que c’est la seule chose qu’on puisse prendre en photo, sur toute l’exposition. Donc je l’ai fait. Vous voyez les petites plaques tout autour?

Davis Cup (1/4s, ƒ/3.5, ISO 800, 21 mm)

It’s the exact same thing as for the Stanley Cup for the NHL: every plaque lists the winning team for a given year, and their final opponents. I couldn’t take any picture of the details of the plaques, it was too polished, you’d only see my camera reflected in it… But I could see parents pointing at some years to show their kids (mostly the years when Lendl was part of a winning team. Seems only fair, all things considered :) ).

C’est la même chose que pour la coupe Stanley de la NHL: chaque plaque liste l’équipe gagnante d’une année, ainsi que leurs adversaires en finale. Je n’ai pas pu prendre de détails des plaques, c’était trop poli, on aurait juste vu mon appareil s’y refléter… Mais je pouvais voir des parents pointer certaines années à leurs enfin (principalement les années où Lendl était dans l’équipe gagnante. Logique, quand on y pense :) ).

By the time I was finished Muching about (lame pun. Deal with it), I realised I spent only a little over an hour going through all the prints and lithographs. This was a very nice exhibition, and as complete as it gets if you don’t know anything about Mucha and want to know more. But be careful. You may want to plan your visit carefully. It only takes one hour to visit, but you have to count the line.

Le temps de finir de m’aMucher (calembours pourrave. J’fais c’que j’veux), je me suis rendu compte que je n’ai passé qu’une petite heure à parcourir toutes les impressions et lithographies. C’est une très belle exposition, et aussi complète que possible si vous ne connaissez rien à Mucha et voulez en savoir plus. Mais attention. Planifiez votre visite correctement. Ça ne prend qu’une heure à visiter, mais faut compter la file d’attente.

Hope that didn’t scare you too much. For the record, it was a local holiday, and overcast weather. I suppose more people would rush to museums and exhibitions in those situations.

J’espère que je ne vous ai pas trop effrayé. Pour info, c’était un jour férié, temps pourri. J’imagine que plus de gens se ruent vers les musées et les expositions dans ces conditions.
